Two angels sat upon a cloud
and gazed down upon the earth.
They longed to leave a gift of light,
a greatest joy of endless worth.
Upon the mountain’s highest peak,
“we’ll hide it far above.
Only the brave who dare to climb
shall find its golden glow.”
The other raised her halo’s gleam:
“No peak can chain their will.
They’ll climb the cliffs and soar through the skies,
their hunger seeking still.”
“Then let us place it in the deepest sea,
where silent waters keep.
In caverns dark and fathomless,
beneath the endless deep.”
Again the other angel softly said:
“They’ll dive, they’ll search, they’ll find.
No ocean depth can ever hide
the restless fire within their mind.”
A hush then fell upon the cloud,
till one with gentle voice
spoke words that shimmered like the dawn:
“I know the truest choice.
We’ll hide this treasure deep within,
because it would be the last place they will look.
They’ll roam through time and space in vain,
yet miss the gift they took.
But when at last they turn inside,
their searching brought to rest,
they’ll find the joy they sought so long
was always self-possessed.”
So down they placed the holy gift
and hid it deep inside.
The treasure waits within,
where true love and happiness abide.
